We have rhubarb right down the bottom of our garden (already there when we moved in 2 years ago), have tried digging it up but it still reappears after a few weeks, and the leaves are huge!.......Thanks

Wow dig 4ft around it... we have only been digging about 1ft around the roots, thats prob why its growing back. Thank you Mamyalynne
Good luck with it.
Have you tried smothering it in custard? Without sunlight it couldn't thrive.
I would love it to be growing and any other veg or fruit in my garden if I had one. Mine is flagged up. I would keep it piggypoo.

None of us are keen on Rhubarb sandyRoe... we give it to our neighbours. We are planning on laying a patio down that end of the garden though, so need to kill it off completely before then.
i'm not entirely convinced that sandy was being serious piggypoo

Connemmara we do grow tomatoes, runner beans, cucumbers and have a grapevine and apple trees, but we need that area for a patio - and rhubarb leaves are toxic and I have my small niece running around the garden a lot, it's just the added worry of her touching the leaves. We love growing our own veg.. so rewarding. Thanks

Lol OK aelpmvw
Piggy, the main toxic agent in rhubarb is oxalic acid which is only toxic if eaten. I can't imagine anyone eating enough raw rhubarb leaves to poison themselves.
if people on soap operas can bury bodies under patios, surely they could cover up a little rhubarb!

Good luck anyway, it does take some killing.
Have you tried a systemic herbicide such as 'roundup'

Yes jomifl we have tried various spray killers, also have chopped and quartered the roots, and flooded the roots (other recommendations we were given?)....but, back up they come ~ bold as brass!

Yes jno....!
In my experience, the easiest way to kill off rhubarb, for me anyway, is to treasure it and try to cultivate it. Every time I try to grow it I fail miserably.
lol, best call in Woofgang Gardeners Inc.
Rhubarb has a big spongy root. If the smallest piece is left after digging it out, it'll start to grow again.
