What ever happened to the 'h' in yoghurt?
6 Answers
Answerbok's question about nougat reminded me of this - what ever happened to the 'h' in yoghurt? Nowadays it seems to be spelt, 'yogurt' but being from the old school, I stubbornly persist in spelling it 'yoghurt'. The Turks don't know the trouble they've started!

The first time the word ever appeared in English in the 17th century, it was spelt 'yoghurd'. It then went through phases as 'yogourt, yahourt, yaghourt' etc and was still appearing in print as 'yoghourt' as late as the 1980s. Both the 'g' and the 'h' seem to have been very "moveable feasts" throughout. As a matter of interest, the OED now gives 'yogurt' as the key spelling.
