Internet Slowed Down - Aol

Hi,

My internet had a load of problems going off and then coming back on again a week or so ago (it did this last year and I got a new router and although the problem continued a bit it then improved a lot and hadn't had any problems for a while).

That hasn't been so bad the last week or so but my internet seems to have slowed down a lot, especially loading webpages and particularly this one.

Wondered if anyone else had had similar problems on here or AOL and whether they have any ideas as to what the reason could be.

I just did a speed check. Results were:

Ping: 47ms
Upload: 4.66mbps
Download: 0.34mbps

Will do another one just to see if it's similar...

Oh, another one had download 3.34 and upload 0.253.

What speed do you pay for?
My laptop has been really slow for about 3 days, I am with plus net and it is reading
Download 8.3 MB average is 12.3

Upload 372 KB average is 2MB

Ooh I'm not sure Rojash, it's not high (no fibreoptic or anything like that), just a standard AOL cheap package I've had for years now.

It wasn't lightening fast but was fine for me before, just the last week or so it's been strangely slow.
When mine dropped to 0.03mbps download last year it turned out to be a fault at the exchange, if it has dropped severely I'd contact my ISP.
my download 3.93 - upload 0.37. Your readings seem better than mine but my internet feels fast.

Looks like time to ring AOL then. I keep meaning to look around and change to a better offer but never get round to it. It does seem to be mainly this site though (and getting that cross scripting message coming up again - not done that for a while).

Is there a problem with the site?
No broadband here or it could be 5.0mb :(
Can anyone tell me about my readings as I am not very good with all this stuff ?
"Ideally upload to aim for is 10mbs for vid/film streamings etc "

Your upload speed is irrelevant for watching videos.
Upload speed of 10mbps is usually only achieved on a service such as Virgin Media 100mbps package or fibre optic through a phone line. You don't even need 10mbps to stream films easily.
*10mbps download to stream films easily*
Jenna, AB has been loading very slowly for me for the last few days, I think it is a problem their end rather than ours. The cross scripting thing is usually down to the browser you use. If you still use IE you could consider switching to Firefox or Chrome (I use Chrome with no scripting problems).

Thanks all. I have no video issues.

Maybe I should change browser then. Have done in the past but changed back as I like IE.

Can I do it without losing my favourites? I have lots of knitting patterns bookmarked.
"Can I do it without losing my favourites? "

Yes. If you switch to Chrome, you'll find that it's blindingly fast compared to IE, and you can easily import bookmarks from IE:

Click the tool button (top right - three horizontal lines)
Choose Bookmarks/ Import bookmarks and settings
Select Internet Explorer
Choose what you want to import (you can also import History and other stuff)
Click Import
