Bt Telephone Problem

My BT telephone is faulty. I have a main phone, one extra connection and the line to my home hub. The telephone does not connect but I can use broadband. I have checked both my telephones direct from the BT input box without success, and disconnected all extra wiring including the connection to the computer but stull have no phone connection. Reconnecting the computer brings back broadband. So how can I have broadband without a standard phone connection. This is not caused by the gales but just occurred on Friday morning. BT are aware and will call to fix by Thursday this week but how can I broadband with a 'faulty' phone line. I hope that I have explained this clearly.

It sounds as if it may be the phones themselves. Perhaps a power problem rather than the phone line?
Have you tried calling your landline from your mobile - this might indicate whether there's a problem with the line or with the phone.

Thank you so far. I doubt that two instruments go faulty at the same time and I have called my number using the mobile getting a ring tone but no ring on the telephone. I have also checked both phones I have separately and my immediate neighbours phone is OK. We use copper not fibre optic cable. I am not trying to find a fault, BT are doing that, but am interested in how I can have broadband on a faulty line.
It is my opinion that there is a fault in the BT Telephone Exchange.

Telephone and Broadband are different signals that pass along the same lines and a micro filter separates them when they enter or leave your property. Hence the reason for the Telephone being available at the same time as Broadband is being used.

In your case it is very likely that there is a failure of Telephone signal at the BT Exchange but the Broadband has remained active. The ringing which you heard on your Mobile would have been a signal in the Exchange which was not being passed along the line to your in-put socket.

That's not particularly because I've got any great knowledge of the intricacies of BT's systems but simply because I've had exactly the same problem (i.e.broadband but no phone) myself! The problem was fixed by an engineer visiting the local exchange.

Thank you everyone. I am now certain that it is a BT fault and not mine. I did think that the two signals were somehow different but wasn't sure
