Anyone help with Q.2: the architect who was schooled at, I presume, St.Andrew's Cathedral, Aberdeen? And which "royal" parish did he design?
Thanks in advance.

Answer Archibald Simpson
I think it is James Gibbs
Which royal "parish" church did Gibbs design ? I think Simpson designed Braemar (attended by Roal Family)
Think you're barking up the wrong 'pole'? It;s a very small church you're looking for (I think).

Now you've got me doubting myself. The architect I was going for isn't 18th century and probably not as 'great' as Simpson. The church I was thinking of was near Balmoral and is quite a famous small church. The only one I've found for Simpson so far is St.Giles in Elgin but is it 'royal'? (Maybe it used to be 'royal' in its history?

What do you think?

I'm always barking up the wrong pole.

I have looked againat this one and think James Gibbs is the more likely answer as he designed St Martinin the Fields which accoring to one website is the official parish church of Buckingham Palace

Beanpole, looks as if you might be right with Gibbs. The clue does say "many miles away" - I wasn't thinking it would be that far away!! (I was going for 50 miles away). Thanks for the suggestions (not sure if the wife fancies a cycling holiday!).

Thnks everyone. I looked at Crathie Church Balmoral but decided it didn't fit and in any case was too near. The church at Sandringham also didn't have a connection with Aberdeen. However, James Gibbs and St.Martin-in-the-Field does seem to fit, so I'm going with that one. Many thanks to everyone for the discussion.
James Gibbs was born in Aberdeen.

try robert adam

Thought about Adam, but could not connect with Aberdeen or with a "royal" parish.
