Winter draws on so I thought I'd try and wash this before I need it. What's the best way?

In the washing machine on the delicates setting.
Does it have washing instructions on the label Sandy? Some are machine washable but do dry it flat or it will grow enormously.
i washed big wollens in the bath tub when i had one now i have to use a warm machis with low spin .
I always manage to shrink everything I was in the machine so I would do it by hand, with Woolite, spin and then dry flat.
*wash*

The last time I tried to use a washing machine for a woolen jumper it shrunk to a size that might fit a toddler.
Fill the sink with hand hot water and a mild detergent. Put Jersey in sink/bowl, give it a good kneading gently rub areas where there is a high level of grime/staining, e.g. cuffs and collar. Knead a bit more and then leave it to soak.

Empty water and gently press water out of Jersey, add fresh water and knead again, repeat the empty water/gently pressing out of water/add fresh water until water runs clean.

When water runs clear carefully press water out of the Jersey without wringing which may cause it to become misshapen. When majority of water is removed lay the Jersey on a large towel and reshape. fold towel in and over the Jersey and roll up. Gently squeeze the roll through it's length to transfer the water from the Jersey to the towel. You will probably need to repeat with another dry towel if the Jersey is very heavy.

When damp reshape the Jersey again and lay on a flat bed airer or over a radiator with a towel underneath.

It sounds a faff but isn't really that bad.
Put on woolen cycle Sandy .....dry flat

murraymints, mustering my memories and some notes for the book was too depressing. I've decided I'll not bother. But to try and prove to myself that I can write a bit I posted links to two short stories which were based on people I once knew and in a place where I used to live. Even though I say it myself, they weren't bad.
Get a woman to do it for you ( Sorry...couldn't resist ! )
Just Febreze it............

I had thought of that. ^ A squirt under the arms before putting it on.
That'll do it, and hang it outside to get some fresh air............
I still think that any woman trained in the 50's or 60's is your best bet sandy...try to get a late 1951 model, as they have proved to be good runners over the years.
