What is the best programme for transfering and editing footage from a sony digicam via firewire onto XP

Well there are loads out there but why don't you try first with Windows Movie Maker which should come installed with XP. I found it surprisingly easy to use for a piece of MS software (apparently they bought it in!), if that doesn't do what you want then you can start thinking about spending money. I never got any further than the basics so never explored other options.

Windows Movie Maker is a good start but it doesn't let you record to DVD.

Unless you find a free Video Editing program from the web or off a magazine disc, consider Adobe Premiere Elements (the favourite in most reviews), or Serif Movie Plus version 4 (very good). There is also a 'cut-down' version of Sony Vegas studio at a reasonable price. One of the easiest to use is either Ulead Studio or Pinnacle Studio. There are concerns over the stability of the Pinnacle product and it doesn't have as many features now.
