What Is The Animated Series About "potato-Like Creatures" From The 70S?

There was an animated tv show I think mid to late 70s with an intro to each episode which explained the origin of the characters. The view of the intro showed a sort of cross section of some woods, with the trees visible at the top and the soil visible as blackness at the bottom. In the soil were what looked like potatoes, but they opened their eyes and sprouted into the main characters. I thought the series was The Moomins, but I saw some episodes recently and the start was just a title card and some music. Does anyone have any ideas what the show was?

The only thing I can think of is Barbapapa - could be wrong though. My memory is a bit vague!

Thanks for the quick replies, I checked both of these on youtube, I never watched the flumps and so didnt recognise the show. I thought you had it with Barbapapa but I recognised the intro on youtube and it wasnt the same show. Any other ideas?

Yes it was the UK, I'm still not 100% certain it wasn't Babapapa, I'm wondering if there was anything else around similar at the same time. Unfortunately none of the youtube videos of that show seem to be in english.

I loved Barbapapa but don't remember them living in the earth, they had big strange looking houses.

There is this episode where the family was born apparantly from the ground (again not in english), this is not exactly how i remember it so either it is a slightly confused childhood memory or a similar idea in another show



If I can find an english version it'll probably help me decide lol.

lol@mr potato head :) no it wasnt that. The sites are good, but there are a lot of shows and they dont give enough info on each to determine if they are the one i'm looking for or not. I'll go through them to see if any names ring a bell though.

No it wasnt the herbs, i watched those recently. A similar theme though - the characters sprouting from the ground

I don't know the name, but it certainly sounds familiar, I'm sure I remember watching it.

The trouble with racking your brain to try and remember something you start wondering what you are remembering and what your mind is making up. I think I remember at the end of the intro a (possibly black) panel appearing on the right of the screen and the characters showing up on the panel with their names. Like the moomins and barbapapa there were a number of them with odd names and I think were a family.
