10a Everyman is taking a liberty a bit here. The answer is "virginal" but strictly speaking the instrument he refers to is the Virginals. This has nothing to do with virgins, incidentally - it derives from latin virga - a jack - referring to the jacks which pop up and down, plucking the strings of a harpsichord as the keys are pressed.
