Why does hot water freeze faster than cold?

We tried this one a while ago and found that the cold water froze at the same rate....but we degassed the cold and hot water....boiling water removes dissolved gas, which will raise the freezing point, this may explain the effect. But I've never seen it demonstrated. If you've got it to work I'd be interested to hear the details...
