I've got back a Birds quiz and the answer to the clue "a surly fellow" is chough. Can anyone explain this to me (in words of one syllable!).

Just putting chough and surly into google comes back with chuff, clownish or surly and chuffiness - in a surly manner

See, G agrees.
Blackiequine I did that quiz also and like you I was puzzled. I had crossbill for my answer. Nobody got them all correct. I'm not surprised.
Chambers 11th Edition gives...

Chuff or Chough, a surly boorish felloe.
or even fellow

Stockethill, I had crossbill too, as was suggested here. I take it you're in the suburbs of the granite city, as am I.

Mamyalynne, I have a Chambers dictionary, although not with me just now. It seems to me you can get the meaning of surly by looking up chough or chuff, but don't get chough by looking up surly, if you know what I mean. Hope I've explained myself there. I feel you need to get the answer first. I'll be interested to look up surly in Chambers.
Yes Blackiequine I live in the north of the city.
