New Car Delivery Charge Rip Off.

Why do these retailers of new cars require extra for delivery. I know they have to be brought to the garage for collection but surely the charge should be swallowed up in the price of the car. Another rip off. Any suggestions of how to bargain my way out of paying an extra few hundred.

Offer to go and collect the car yourself in person, perhaps?

Tell them it's a deal breaker and you'll go elsewhere. Always picked up my cars in person and not paid a penny until I've seen it on the day.

Few cars come from the UK now, my Vauxhall Zafira came from Germany it would have cost over £300 to go and pick it up plus a long drive.
Just tell the retailer you want an 'all in price' or you will go to another dealer, there is a lot of competition for your custom so just bargain your way to a better price.

Did the notice of the price of the car say 'delivery cost not included'?

Most car manufacturers will quote a RRP and a Recommended OTR price. This is the on-the-road price and is quoted as the normal retail price that you pay and it includes delivery, 12 month road fund and DVLA First registration fee (currently £55). So, you do pay a delivery fee...even if you don't notice!
It's up to you to get the best discount you can on the OTR price to negate all these add-ons.

Well yes, but I was just highlighting the fact that they will happily drop the delivery charge if push comes to shove on a potential sale.

A few years ago I got £2000 knocked off a car with a forecourt price of £7000. I didn't buy it though as it wasn't the model I wanted. I was just humouring the salesman who seemed to think I wanted the car.
