Vacumn Cleaners - What would you buy?

My 2nd Dyson has started to fall to pieces just like the last one did and I am resigned to the fact that I have to buy a new one.

But am I just being sucked in by the claims of Dyson and are they really the top of the pops when it comes to cleaners?

I have cats and so i do need a powerful cleaner but I have also been told by my carpet fitter that a powerful cleaner can take years off your carpet!  (Never get him started on Dysons!)

Help!  What would you buy?

P.S. I do have a Kirby which leaves the suction on a Dyson standing but its cumbersome and heavy and makes hoovering feel like a 2hr workout in the gym!

I have a Miele  - the 'animal' version... called something like 'Cat and Dog'. It is FAB!! I have 2 dogs and a cat and it really keeps my floors/furniture etc hair-free.

It is not heavy and is not a pain on the stairs either.

I had 2 Dysons before and they (in my opinion) were pants. One blew up and the other was so heavy i sighed with relief when it also blew up.

I agree with purpose, I was put off Dyson by friends problems, went for the Miele Cat and Dog, and it is truly truly fantastic, I have a dark burgandy carpet throughout, and a tabby cat.......... the hoover removes all trace of hair from carpet, from chair covers, even from the duvet.... lightweight hoover with three separate heads, one for soft furnishings, one for wood/laminate and the other for carpets.  truly the bees knees!

I'm with the others.Miele Cat and Dog.Brilliant.
Our Dyson is redundant in the loft.
Dyson was far too heavy and cumbersome and a pain to clean the stairs with and when you have to empty the cylinder half the muck ends up back on the floor again.Plus you couldn't get right up to the skirting boards with it..It's a good cleaner but not for me.I am really happy with my Miele.

On the whole cylinder vaccuum cleaners are much better than uprights. I have a dyson (inherited from my Mum), but wouldn't have another, I find it very heavy, clumsy and impossible to vaccuum anything nearby with that stretchy hose thing, have to be about 4 feet away from where you want to be! Give me my cylinder anyday.

I ran a pub/restaurant for 15 years.  We started with a Henry, went on to a Kirby (admittedly second-hand), tried a few other domestics, and then!!!!!!!!!!!!!! bought a second-hand Nilfisk.  When I finally sold the business and left it behind, it was twenty-five years old !  I've noticed them being used for aircraft on quick turnarounds - says everything!

We have a Sebo upright (made in Germany), which is absolutely fantastic & a Hitachi cylinder for cleaning the cars, etc., which is equally as good.

I had a Dyson but soon hated it .....  hoovers used to be so simple in the old days ... and they didn't have bags.  Now I have a Miele, fantastic!   My Dyson ruined my antique rug by the way and took all the pile off it.

Point taken !  It probably summarises my life ! Shortly after that they brought out a special 'rug' setting.

Well thank you all so very much.  I didnt even know about the Miele.  It is 'bags' cheaper than the Dyson and alot more compact.  I didnt want to sound anti-dyson its just the build quality is debatable (or is it I am rough with them!! LOL).

MIELE CAT AND DOG definitely best for me.. I have 3 cats and gave up with Dyson as was not hoovering up cat hairs... Miele is great and very light weight - made housework a lot easier for me!

I'm another Miele fan.  Have two small cylinder cleaners (one for upstairs and one for downstairs to save lugging up and down)  They work very effectively on my fitted carpets on the most powerful settings, for which I normally use the wood floor setting instead of the brush  (which saves taking too much surface fluff off the carpets and preserves their life). And when the bag gets full, if you don't have a spare one you can pull all the fluff out with a pair of narrow kitchen tongs ande reuse it !!

I realise this thread is a little old but after seeing it I thought I would add this for anyone who is currently looking to buy a vaccuum cleaner.

Whaterver you buy, don't buy a Hoover H1M (The One)

They are a nightmare and you cannot get a refund. Just hundreds of visits by the engineers.
