It's a maths symbol. I think it might mean 'not', but I'm not certain of that!

Thank you Darth, that is sweet of you!!!! If Think Deep is right, that would be great. LeMarchand-- character map-- what? where? I am not the biggest computer genius in the world. Please tell me!! Or someone else, please tell me! As for my own username, it's the same username I use for basically everything I do online. K.E.J. are the initials of my name. Some usernames must contain a numeral so I chose 2000. It's kind-of a joke (if only 'funny' to myself!!)-- in the mid-20th Century, many products marketed in the USA (from vacuums to toasters to typewriters, and more) were called a "[Such-and-Such] 2000". It was supposed to lead consumers to believe that the product was really space-age, high-tech, futuristic, innovative, ahead-of-its-time, significant, miraculous, etc., because it hinted at the future year 2000... a year which really captured people's imaginations back then. So I am not just plain KEJ, I am KEJ2000! As I said, it's probably only funny to me, because I remember that other stuff!! Also, 2000 was the year I became a member of eBay, etc., so that factors in to it too. (I'm curious about sft42, too! If you're reading this, let's hear the story!) And you, Darth Vader?? You aren't that evil, are you?!!

Hi there KEJ nothing that exciting really to my name...like you the first part is my initials then the 42 was used because (in no real order of importance) it was my old house number, the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything (at least in the hitchhiker books by Douglas Adams) and part of the name of one of my favourite bands LeveL 42.......Funny how certain things always seem to crop up as you go through life....42 and 13 my other number are always present!

KEJ2000: I can't be bothered to fire up my Win'98 laptop to see if it's on that flavour of Windows, but in Win XP there is a small program called "Character Map" that enables you to insert maths symbols, the ' sign and it's ilk, characters from different alphabets (Arabic, Greek, Cyrillic, Hebrew etc) and other such characters that would never all fit on your keyboard's keys. You get to it by clicking Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map. You'll see a scrollable block with the available characters. You can hover over the characters to see what they are, and how to access them from the keyboard, or select and copy the character you need for pasting into your document. Here's some random characters (I'm assuming Answerbank will allow these!): ΩЯשف♣∞ﺡ.

Thanks! I use Win98 and I tried doing what you said. I do see that symbol there...but it still didn't tell me what it means or represents. It must be something very important, or else it wouldn't come standard on a UK keyboard (right?!). (Then again, if it's that important, why is it still a mystery to all of us?!!!)

I can't give a defnitive answer to the meaning of the symbol � but it is certainly used in Logic.
In logic, if A is a proposition, then �A, pronounced "not A", is true if and only if A is false.

Mikewall is certainly correct in that it's used in predicate logic (used in artificial intelligence logic) but i do not believe this is why the symbol is on our keyboards. I thought that NOT in the mathematical/computer logic sense was represented by the ! exclamation mark? (as in: NOT P -> !P)
