Who Would The Artist Have Had In Mind As A Potential Buyer Of This Painting?

I remember seeing it in a exhibition of Sickert's work some time ago. It's a fairly large work, but apart from that it doesn't seem something that would brighten the mood in a house where it was hung.

Does an artist thing about potential buyers when they paint? - or just of being hung in exhibitions somewhere?

True enough. If the painters were thinking of potential clients we might see little other than chocolate box type images.
Lord knows, Sandy..unless it was commissioned by the people next door to let the lady know that they know she listens through the wall with a tumbler.
Not being an artist I cannot say, but likely they just paint what they see or feel and don't even think about buyers or exhibitions.
I had the pleasure of visiting Tate Modern a few years ago. The only work of art that shocked me was the picture of Myra Hindley, which was painted with a dolls hand.
I was really impressed with the actual space the art was set in; the turbine hall!

Great artists did not paint for the market; van Gogh reportedly only sold one painting in his life, and that to his brother. I don't find the picture depressing at all and it is a fine depiction of a domestic scene
