New York hotel or appartment?

I am planning visit new york for one week in August. My uncle says it might be cheaper for me to rent an apartment for a week rather than pay hotel prices. Would you reccomend this? I 've found appartments but flights are �410 return. Can i get these cheaper anywhere? and has anyone stayed at a resonably priced hotel in a good location?

Definately recommend it. You will feel as if you are living there and making your own breakfast etc is so much better.
Stay below 23 st between 3rd and 8th avenues...much more fun than midtown. Chelsea and the village are great areas...bars restaurants etc. Flights will not be cheap as its the summer hols. BA, Virgin American or US are all aboutthe same. fly mid afternoon outbound and late evening on your return to avoid jet lag. have a great time.
