Have you got a triangular bandage (or something that could substitute for it) available? An elevated sling (holding his wrist close to his shoulder) might help.
Has Mr M knocked the wrist recently? Hospitals don't always spot fractures. (I write from experience. It took Sheffield's Northern General Hospital a fortnight to recognise that I'd broken my wrist, despite having X-rayed it!).

My first thought is gout or a condition called pseudogout.
There are distinguishable by a blood test.
The treatment i would suggest is Ibuprofen 600mgms every 6hours.
He's not injured it at all, in fact, he got up for a wee at 4am and it was fine, he got up 8ish and was in agony.
Will get him to the doctor asap today.
Sqad..I did wonder about gout...
Thanks for your replies xx
Gold star for Sqad! Almost certainly gout... he had a blood test which will be back tomorrow.
Things not too bad thanks Anne.. fingers still firmly crossed! Could do with a bit of luck health wise as we seem to go from one ailment to another - better off than a lot of poor souls though xx
