my parrot has large feet and his nails seem long, he is 13 months old, should i get them trimmed or leave them

If they are too long they can easily get caught on something and even result in broken legs. If the bird is fairly tame you can trim them yourself, but if you have never done it before, it would really be safer to take it to the vet and ask him/her to show you how to do it. Trimming bird-nails needs some knowledge because there is a blood vessel that runs at least threequarters down the length of the nail. If you cut into that, the bird may bleed excessively and it needs immediate searing to stem the blood flow.
I am somewhat concerned that a parrot as young as 13 months may need its nails trimming already. Perhaps you should look at providing it with thicker perches. If you have one of those cages that have a wire bottom, put a small paving slab or something similar on the bottom (not under the perches) so the bird can wear its nails down on that and feel happier to spend some time on the bottom.
