I think they use it to mean something for which there is no obvious explanation, and which seems a bit unusual.

I always buy The Guardian, but today I bought the Daily Mail.

They should mean - it is by chance or like throwing a die
and that therefore they cannot be blamed as a cause.

but may not be....
as in the election of Margt Thatcher was really random.

Stock Markets are really random and so NY going above 16 000 is just another random events

in both cases I would be moved to say - er I dont think they really were you know
