Why do they make their products look like sausages, fillets, minced meat, burgers etc. just seems a bit silly to me, shaping them to look like meat.

Yes, why not make it Cauli or carrot shaped then they could serve it up with erm....cauli and carrots.

Wise words.
It's sort of like my mother-in-law, who will not imbibe alcohol, wanting a wine shaped bottle of sparkly stuff poured into a wine glass. What the hell is that all about?!
Totally agree if it offends you to eat an animal why make your veggie products look and taste like animal.
Sausages, mince, and burgers aren't shapes or meat products that occur naturally in animals. The carnivores don't have a copyright on the design.
As a vegetarian, i wouldn't go near meat substitutes or imitations. I saw fish free scampi being advertised the other day!

But the sausage and burger shape doesn't offend me, i'd eat veggie burgers for example, as long as they weren't dressed up to taste like meat.
I agree with Sandy.
I don't know what sandyRoe is talking about....apart from the mince.
Presumably people become veggies because they disapprove of animals being exploited and eaten, not because they dislike the taste of meat. Its an ethical standpoint, not an culinary argument. So if vegetables, Quorn and other such things can be made into palatable foodstuffs, I'm not sure what the problem is.

Veggie friends of mine always say that the smell of bacon, sizzling gently in the frying pan is the hardest test of their resolve !
I have no moral standing with regards of meat. I just don't like it very much.

Meat is not appealing to everyone, especially bacon.

Sandy is saying - you didn't butcher the animal and get a sausage. They are man made, so why shouldn't veggies form their food in the same manner...
ummmm..I am intrigued !

You say that you don't like meat very much....all meat or just certain types of meat ? The only relationship that chicken, beef and lamb have is that they are all called meat, because they all have a very different taste. Sausages can taste of pretty well anything, for instance. Would you call yourself a vegetarian if you didn't eat meat because you didn't like the taste or would you refer to yourself as a non-meat eater ?
what I don't understand (as I mentioned last night) is why some Quorn products are done up to taste like, e.g., chicken or bacon.
I do eat meat but just in very small portions. I don't like the texture so could happily leave it off my plate. I eat it because I cook it.

If I lived alone I would be a non meat eater because I'd happily eat the gravy made with the meat juices.

I love fish :-)

I don't eat enough fish. No reason why, I just don't. I think I'll buy some today.
boxy...I thought that I answered that in my post of 07.47. Surely veggies don't eat meat from a ethical standpoint, not culinary. If some people don't like the taste of meat and therefore don't eat it for that reason, they are non-meat eaters, which isn't really the same as being a vegetarian is it ?

I think sprouts are dreadful and don't eat them. But I don't like them because they taste horrible, not because I am standing up for the human rights of the veg pickers in Lincolnshire that work under ghastly slave-like conditions..Things like Quorn and the like would be pretty well inedible, if no flavouring was added. It would just be a pallid, squidgy mess. What else could you make Quorn taste of...cabbage or strawberries ?
I wouldn't eat Quorn either.
you cant beat a nice sea bass.
Thanks ummm ! I too like fish but despite being the son of a fishmonger, I really don't eat enough. As a Catholic boy in the 50's and 60's, we always had fish on a Friday, because the priest told us that we wouldn't go to heaven if we had meat ! We had far too much boiled cod for my liking though...the smell of it still make me want to heave.
