Hair colour

I have Dark Brown Hair which has been going grey for over 20 yrs and have to colour it every 3 weeks as the roots come through so quick and it makes me feel as though i dont want to go out and i feel self concious, So I thought that i would put a medium blonde colour WELLA VIVA no 70 and thought that if it was lighter in colour my roots wouldn't show up as quick. so i followed all the instructions and its as Dark in colour as it was before, no difference and a total waste of money, I just dont understand why it didn't take at all, its literally just as dark as it was before. I am not working at the moment due to a injured shoulder so dont have hairdresser money. Any suggestion please.

Is there a college or hairdressing school in your area as these often wants models for the students to practice on (with supervision). The results should be as good as going to a salon and they may put highlights in for you which may help.

you need to get it done professionally, so as kriss said, look for hairdressing students who will do it cheaply. i have streaks in mine (my daughter is a hair-colourist and does it for me) because like that, the root-line isn't so obvious and i can go longer between dyings without a hard brown/grey line showing.

you need to get highlights put in...to mingle the grey in...their are some good reasonable price kits in the chemist...boots or superdrug..you could do with highlights in shades of blonde and copper..so it looks natural..if your hair is really dark brown it would look nice if you did it auburn and then added some lighter copper highlights...putting a blonde dye on it wont work....it will make it dull and lifeless looking you need to add some red to get a brighter reflection..

Thanks for replying, someone else has suggested that maybe my hair is over processed, is there anyway of stripping the build up of hair colourant on my hair, I would settle for just light brown, but as i have said whatever colour i put on it still comes out Dark Brown.

Oh no, don't have it stripped. I did that, I have mid length, fine, flat medium brown hair. Thought that being 40 I should try lightening it. Had it stripped (ginger/orange) and then lightened. I hated it, dark eyebrows etc. I now dye mine myself, have to do it every 4-6 weeks cos of my "silver" roots" and I use no. 118c medium chestnut brown by nice and easy. It has a red tint and a nice shine. Everyone at works comments when I do it & its cheaper than going to salons.

thanks for your advice, the trouble was for me, that my roots come through within 2-3 weeks (hair grows so fast) and I was afraid of damaging my hair, I thought that if i went a couple of shades lighter the grey wouldn't show as much and therefore wouldn't have to die it every 2-3 weeks, that was the theory anyway, but in practice it didn't work and the blonde dye didn't take anyway.
