We do not choose who we are sexually attracted to, we all have a type and for the vast majority of us it is acceptable, or if unacceptable it is harmless (eg the man in the papers this week who is fixated on slurry).
Paedophiles are not new. There have always been and will always be paedophiles. I do not believe anybody decided to be a paedophile - they just are.
I hope most people with those inclinations are able to control them but anyone with those feelings cannot get help. There is no government organisation or charity that helps paedophiles who are frightened they may not be able to control their urges. There is no official they can turn to without fearing they will lose their job, their family, their everything.
And who is going to support such a charity if it existed? No national or international companies would dare put their name to such a venture. It would be financial suicide.
If the government provided a helpline or support centres the tax payer would be outraged.
It is about time we as a whole were adult and realistic about this problem that will never go away and find ways to stop paedophiles offending; to give support to paedophiles that are frightened they may offend.
It must be a living hell to be that way. I am convinced it is never a conscience decision to have those feelings - who on earth would choose to be like that?
Paedophiles who act on their urges must be punished but those who need help should be able to find it.
