Wooden Flooring over Carpet - can I do it?

Hello!

I seem to be relying on this site more and more to solve my problems...good stuff

I've got carpets where I live but I really dislike the looks of it...could I put wooden flooring over it? I'm not allowed to take them off cos I rent the place.

Could that be used as a permanent measure?

Which are the pros and cons?

Sorry I'm very ignorant in DIY stuff but I'm willing to have a go at it.

We have got a laminate floor and I can't imagine that you could lay that on top of carpets.

No you certainly can't! The laminate wouldn't sit properly and the carpet would probably rot.

If your landlord is agreeable though, you could carefully take the carpets up, roll them and store them safely.

When you come to leave, you would then put the carpets back down.

NO NO NO and NO!!!!

If you place laminate or wooden flooring over carpet you will be spending money on a worthless cause!!

Wooden floors need expansion gaps to expand and contract, also they will not sit right on carpet, they will move and within a few short weeks warp and come apart!

Oh no...I kept my hopes up throughout the day only to find that I can't do it...

Will think about 'removing the carpet carefully'...never removed a carpet before in my life though...you just dig it out the edges???

you can lay laminate on any carpet that is flat and not more than 5mm thick eg..cord.. i did my bedrooms about two years ago and i have had no problems.
