I use Azureus.

You need a client becuase that is the program that actually downloads the files and keeps track of which files are where and how much of them you have left to download.

Without the client you could not do anything.

BitTorrent is two things, which can be a little confusing.

First and foremost, its the name of a computer protocol, that tells all the computers involved how to share the files; basically, how to communicate with the other computers.

Secondly, it's the name of the default client (the program that uses the BitTorrent protocol to download), which was also created by the same guy that wrote the protocol, Bram Cohen.

If you just want very basic control, then the default client may suffice. But I, like vehelpfulguy, am a big fan of Azureus. I consider it to be the best. It gives you loads of control, so does a lot more than the default client can do.
