Can anyone tell me the title of the "hard-luck" violin dirge commonly shown/played on TV. I'd appreciate a link to a youtube clip or something similar.

Thank you

Not sure which one you mean, and there are also a lot that are specially written for programmes and ads. Can you give any particular instance of it being used?
Do you mean this one, Hearts and Flowers?

Sorry saxy_jag, but I can't give a specific instance but I have heard it so many times on TV.

Robinia, that's the one!! I'm very grateful. Having looked it up on Wikipedia, I notice it was used in silent movies, which was probably the first instance I do recall hearing the music. Thank you very much!! I'd never have found it on my own.

We must have a psychic connection. Yesterday, at almost exactly the time you posted your question, I was thinking "I wonder what the title of that piece of music played on violins to accompany sad silent movies is?". I wasn't expecting to get an answer on AB without even posting the question! (Thanks, Robinia!)
I'm sure 'enough with the hearts and flowers' is a saying - could it come from the title of this piece of music?
You're welcome...I'm often humming it. :)
