Did you see that other blast from the past - Bottomley - trying to justify 74k by saying that GPs and so on would be forced to take a pay cut to serve as MP, as things stand?
Firstly, What The Funicular are GPs being paid these days?? (No wonder the NHS costs a bomb!)
Secondly, if you spend 7 years training someone to be a GP and you pay them 75k+ why would you -want- them to "step down" to become MPs at all.
Plenty of people out there who'd love to get their hands on the levers of power for under 30k.
(I'm not saying they'd be competent - just keen, Heh heh)
