Inflamed Gums, Very Sore. No Pain In Teeth

i was at dentist today after having pain in teeth, but after xray today it showed no infection . though my gums have receeded and swollen up, now in in bad pain. i asked him to give me something for it but he gave me colgate flouride toothpaste and amoxicillan antibiotics.
what could be causing this pain, anyone else had this ?
and what would best pain killer be to buy ?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.If the gums are receded and swollen they are likely infected, believe me I know as I have spent the last 35 years with gum and tooth problems, to the point where I have severe bone loss in my upper and lower jaws and my teeth are practically falling out. One was so loose that when they extracted it the other week there was no blood or pain at all, it was barely hanging in there. lol.
My wife had a similar problem about 6 weeks ago - she could hardly open her mouth for the pain. Dentist gave her a thorough check and X-ray and could see no obvious cause for the pain ie, no abcess etc. He gave her two different antibiotics and the pain steadily decreased over the following couple of weeks and finally disappeared. We always use aspirin for pain control but if you have a preferred favourite that will do just as well. Remember to finish the course of the antibiotics.
Due to brushing hard your gums also becomes swollen but i think it was due to infection but it was not happened to you. So for getting relief from this put a cotton ball dipped in the eucalyptus oil at the swollen place.
