to scotstone how can there be oxygen in the universe i thought space was a vacuum and without oxygen i thought fire could not exist ?

The vacuum is the spaces between matter. All the elements exist in the universe, space is mostly a vacuum but there are clumps of matter in the form of stars and planets etc. As stated already the sun is not a fire, it is a fusion reaction generating heat and light, effectively a giant ball of plasma.

Even in deep space the vacuum between galaxies is not a perfect one. Subatomic vacua (vacuums) also contain regions of electron-density and neutrinos, etc.
