we should be like US in some respects, one should have a job before arrival, if planning to study they should have a valid visa, one that has an end date, and that should be enforced - many students seemingly over stay their visas and end up working, if so how do they show up on the tax radar?

Is your issue that these tests are being introduced, and that we have to pay for them?

Has that level of detail been published yet? How do you know that those sitting the test won't have to pay an admin charge, like those applying for British passports?

sp, if it had started years ago we wouldn't have as many immigrants that we have now, as they would have failed the test.
And if this goes ahead (unlikely) let them take the test in the Country they come from, not here!

But then they did not come here and then went on to benefits, did they?

no they presumably got work and raised a family, as did ours, who all worked, not relied on any state handouts because essentially there weren't any. We did welcome peoples, and the 10,000 children who came on the Kindertransport and settled in Britain, many never to see their families again.
