Electronic Prescriptions

I noticed today when I collected my prescription that they will now be sent electronically to our chemist - this is the first I have heard about. Whose benefit is it for and will it make any difference in the long run?

There IS a difference on the surgery side, if you are on regular meds - the GP is able to write a scrip for say, 6 months, then the pharmacy dispenses to you every month (or whatever is necessary). Saves writing several repeats, the script gets changed if you have a medicines review at a GP visit. Also helps the pharmacy to know what's likely to be required in coming...

It benefits the chemist as the prescription is emailed to them, so you don't collect it and take it to any other chemist, giving them a monopoly on most prescriptions from a particular surgery . For my parents it still takes a minimum of 48 hours from dropping their repeat requests into the surgery to picking up the medicines so no difference for the patient as our chemist doesn't do home deliveries.
We have always done as you do starone we just go to the chemist to pick it up although they do offer a delivery service. Its just that today when I picked up my meds there was an enclosure to say that the prescription will be sent electronically to our nominated chemist So I suppose it won't be a lot different

My surgery has been online for some time now (a couple of years maybe). You just log on to their website and tick whatever you require from your list of repeats. The pharmacy pick it up. The electronic link from surgery to pharmacy is another step forward in my opinion. If you dont have a computer the pharmacy will do it all the ordering for you.
