Do You Still Tip?

How many of you still give Christmas tips, if you do, who do you give them to and how much do you give, a sum of £5 has been suggested but is that a little steep?

In these days one does not seem to have the same personal contact with the various services at one's door, has one did years ago.

Take the dustman for example, some councils won't allow their employees to accept tips and besides gone are the days when they would come to where you kept the galvanised steel bin, lift it on their shoulder take it to the vehicle and empty it and then return it from where they had picked it up.

Now one has to wheel the various bins to the front of one's property and wheel them back when they are empty.

And who has a milkman these days?

We dont have a paper boy.. I do tip the binmen and the postie...I think they work very hard.... In all winds and weather, and in my experience keep cheerful and do they the job well ! I also get tips..I'm a hairdresser...and appreciate them very much, that may have a bearing on why I tip others..its really nice to feel appreciated. Merry Christmas to you all. Mrs C xxxxxx ;- ))

BChico your meal lasts 2-4hrs before replenishing but your haircut will last 6weeks - which is the more valued service ?

If it is normal tips you are talking about, not just Christmas, I always give my hairdresser something according to what she has done - cut and blow dry would be £2, a perm (I'm old fashioned) would be £5. If an apprentice does the shampooing I give her £1. They are very good and actually listen to me and give sensible answers!

A postman chum of mine usually gets over £1,200 at Crimbo.

Postman £10, never see dustmen and, because I have used our health centre more frequently this past year, I'll leave in a small hamper

Just had Cavity Wall Insulation done today, dropped them £20, they cleaned up well.

I don't understand this about tipping people who are only doing their job, nothing exceptional (e.g. in the doctor's surgery). I took a tin of biscuits to the vets a couple of years ago when they'd really helped me out, but that was a thank-you, not a tip. You don't tip the bus driver who takes you to work every day.
