Sending Christmas Cards

Why do people send Christmas cards to people they see regularly? They were initially introduced to send to people far away or to someone who you no longer have regular contact with to wish them a happy Christmas. Someone you see a lot of you can wish them seasons greetings to their face. I would rather not bother anyway and give money to charity instead.

I always get them from the neighbours, half of which don't even say hello if I see them in the street.........
well exactly, ummm, one neighbour sent one who didn't even know which house we live in, she put it through next door!
they decorate a home nicely over Christmas, so why not? Written cards are more formal than just greeting someone in the street.
