By a doctor? It is my opinion you should drink when you are thirsty - though if you are showing signs of being dehydrated, you may need to prompt yourself to drink - otherwise your body tells you what is right.

i feel thirsty much of the time, no matter how much i drink.
You'll do it if you down a litre before midday.
measure what 250 mls is - a bit bigger than a cup
first 250 when you rise - as many cups of tea as that is
250 between 9 and 10
250 betwen 10 and 11
and the final 250 before midday et voila
you only need a litre before bed

I imagine someone connected with the NHS has suggested this.

easy to do - I noticed I started this after a bout of septicaemia and concluded that it had permanently affected my kidneys....

anyway good luck....

Have you told GP of constant thirst? Had a check for Diabetes?
Question Author
yes i have and its all being checked, diabetes hasn't been totally ruled out.
but its been a nightmare...
I know you have been through the mill and I hope you get sorted Emmie.
As long as your urine is pale and not on any way offensive, then drink what you like and when you like.
If your urine is dark and smells of ammonia, then you are not drinking enough water.
Coffee is a VERY mild diuretic.....no big deal.
Question Author
sqad, its variable, sometimes no colour at all, sometime a pale tea colour.
i just feel dehydrated
emmie.....you may feel dehydrated but you are clearly not. Drinking 2 litres of fluid a day is not going to ease your problem.
Question Author
seems that way.
Question Author
i don;t think i could manage two litres, will vary it with some non concentrate fruit juice, and occasional coffee anyway.
i eat fine, just that i have lost this weight, it's not nice.
ANY fluid- even coffee - counts towards this "2L a day" you do not need to imbibe 2L of water other than food and beverages in order to be adequately hydrated. The true test is as Sqad says, and simply whether you feel thirsty or not.

There is fluid in food. There is fluid in soft drinks, or milk, or tea, or coffee, and the amount of fluid you take in is far in excess of any mild diuretic effect that the coffee or tea might have...
Question Author
i know about the food aspect, will have my coffee as and when then top up with some water...
Question Author
it just that it's what the doctor said, and who can disagree with our finest.
Drink when thirsty, eat when hungry, 1ltr, 2 ltr, whatever, if you are not already on a special diet then why worry. Also drinking too much water can be bad for you.
I drink tea about 4 mugs a day. Fresh orange juice 2 glasses a day. A lager with my dinner and a nightcap of a B&C. The only time I drink water is well.......never.
