Does anyone know of a cheap but respectable hotel or B&B in Venice near the centre, also any ideas how to make the stay as pleasant as possible?

"cheap" "respectable" and "Venice" do not appear in the same sentence. Try looking in Mestre which is on the mainland side & a train trip of only a few minutes from Venice itself.

in the evenings the orchestras play outside the resteraunts in st marks square beatiful
