.. and why do we sing that most people don't understand?
At a guess:
If you hold hands 'the normal way' with someone they can dance two arms length away from you, which is hardly 'bonding the group together'. Crossing arms forces everyone together, symbolising unity.
To stop the jocks picking our pockets.
