Can someone tell me which is the better phone to purchase and is it true with iphones you can only put music on your phone through iTunes? Thank you.

Cant say which is better but the Galaxy S4 is their latest phone, whereas the Iphone 4 has been superseded by the Iphone 5
They are both good phones though Which magazine placed the Galaxy S4 above the Iphone 4 (but only just).
When the iPhone 5 came out that went above the Galaxy S4.

I have only used iphones, but I have found them to be very reliable. The software seems to be more logical than android ones but that might be because I am used to Apple. Do people queue up overnight outside other stores, to buy new android phones like they do everywhere in the world for the latest iphone ?

No but then there are plenty of Android phones from many companies so no need to queue.
Also many people who like Apple are sad enough to want the "brand" rather than the product.
These wonderful Samsung adverts take the micky out of the "sad" Apple fans
