replacing block paving with slabs

I am going to replace the block paviors on my existing patio with random sized 40mm slabs and also extend the patio onto ground that was previously covered in asphalt and partly used as a driveway. The new patio will also extend over some grass which was also previously part of the driveway (before the grass was laid). All this was before I took ownership.

Under the existing patio there is sharp sand and hardcore, and the ground under the driveway has never been disturbed in the past 10 years.

I plan to excavate the driveway/grassed areas down to 90mm below the required level and then lay the 40mm slabs onto a 50mm bed of mortar. On the existing patio I intend to remove the paviors and sufficient sand so that the 50mm bed and slabs will match the height (allowing for falls away from the house).

Is there a better way to approach this? Am I likely to run into problems using my suggested method?

It would be just about adequate for a patio, altho I would suggest deeper excavations,150mm ish, with compacted hardcore or a concrete base and then lay on a mortar bed. If you are intending to run vehicles over the paving then 200mm would be the minimum for a sound job. Remember there are new regulations regarding water run-off (SUDS) where you must dispose of surface water on your property thru soakaway or permeable paving.
