The longevity of some sections of the Japanese population made me wonder if their diet offered some protection against cancers. If it does could it also afford protection against dementia? There wouldn't be much point aiming to live to be 100+, if 20 or more, of your years were viewed through the mists of Alzheimers.

Possibly not; taken from a report on the BBC website "There are an estimated 8.62m patients suffering from dementia in Japan, including 4m with milder cognitive disorders, Mainichi Daily News reports - around a quarter of all senior citizens in the country."
