Harrod's is to close its pet department at the end of the month, citing "commercial reasons".

How it survived, selling puppies in this day and age, is a bit of a mystery, but I imagine that lots of the customers are foreign and accustomed to pet shops that do that.

Do you know of any pet shop that sells puppies?

will they still take dogs for walkies by putting them on a treadmill with a screening of 101 Dalmatians in front of them?
A dog walking service here in Belfast charges £12 an hour to walk a pooch. Gawd knows what Harrods would want.
I thought that it was against the law to sell puppies and kittens from a shop like that. It is bound to have a detrimental effect on the animals.

Do they say if they are having a closing down sale Fred?

No closing down sale; they have already shifted all the stock. What they charged for puppies was eye-watering, at least three times what a pup from a breeder would charge.
Do they keep the bitches with the pups? it really isn't a natural environment for the puppies to be in at such an age.

Do they sell second-hand and very annoying long-haired girl cats?
you looking for another house guest are you, wolfie ?

No, they were selling puppies in glass fronted cases with sawdust on the bottom. No sign of the dam. They had different breeds in the same box.
"Do you know of any pet shop that sells puppies"? Yes. Just about every pet shop in the US does that.
Seekeerz, I was thinking of swapping Merlin, Warrior Princess for something slightly less vicious. Have you ever seen a vet try to muzzle a cat? It is dangerous work. :-)

I think that selling dogs in a store encourages spur of the moment purchases. People don't realise that adopting n animal is the easy bit.
Muzzling a cat ...errr NO, how do you do that ?? Princess Merlin getting a bit out of hand is she ??

Personally I don't think puppies should be sold through pet shops, impulse buying doesn't make for the best start in life in a lot of cases
seekers, Merlin is the long haired sister of my avatar. She has been diagnosed by the vet as being stupid. She also has a very short fuse. She is very pretty and built like a tank.

I love them - most of the time.
Sadly Harrod are still offering to 'source' puppies for clients from their list of suppliers. We had someone in our breed supply Harrods with a litter years ago, and when we pointed out to Harrods the inherited eye problem we had in the breed and asked if they were prepared to be sued if they did not notify the puppy buyers they decided to not sell that breed again. There was nothing we could do as the breeder was not a member of our breed club, although Kennel Club regulations say they should not be sold in this way! There are some 'puppy supermarkets' that sell lots of different breeds and I do not think any puppy should be allowed to be sold unless it is direct from the breeder with the mother present with the puppies. Sadly with the advent of online puppy sales sites many of the puppies advertised are not even born in this country and people are importing underage puppies by the vanload and selling them online, often meeting the buyers in laybyes and service stations. If only people would stop and think about it and only buy when they can see where the puppies were born then there would not be a problem.
What lankeela said!!
Apparently its also common practice to keep a bitch around and say that she is the dam of the litter for sale when in fact the pups are just put with her for sale and may not even be all from the same litter.

In America if you want a pup and the breeder isn't near you they will ship the pup to you by air!!!!!
Was it Harrods who sold Christian the Lion to a couple of guys in the 1960s?

It eventually got released back into the wild and they all met up again a few years later.

As the mature lion approached the two of them its facial expressions changed from "lunch" to "there are my two buddies from London".
