put it in a room with open windows for a week or so and lots of frabeeze(spelt wrong)
Febreze ! It will take ages, it happens to me every Christmas. Try a candle in the room when people are smoking, or a bowl of vinegar is supposed to extract the smell, don't know if it works though.
redecorate

Fresh air is best but it's hardly the time of year to put it out in the garden for a couple of days. Why not drop a hint to your friend and ask her what she uses to get rid of the cigarette smell in her guest room as the bed is now stinking you out of house and home !

Cigarette smells are notoriously difficult to remove from fabric which you can't wash. I can only suggest possibly spraying it with an anti-tobacco air freshener.

Using an aromatherpy oil burner with a lavender oil will help remove the smell. If you don't need to use the bed for a while, possibly a hired steam cleaner (the type used to clean carpets & upholstery) might also remove the worst of the odour.

Thanks for all suggestions Wendy i have actually had the mattress out on the patio in the sun and it does seem a bit fresher but i will try all other ideas as well thanks all.
Cut two onions in half, place one piece on each quarter of the bed, cover everything completely with plastic sheet(s) down to floor level, leave for 48 hours. You can fold the thing up if it does fold (to reduce space and sheet requirement - onions can be simply evenly placed) and have anywhere convenient.

Have you tried this yourself and doesthe smell of onion go away after.
Unfortunately, the only sure way to get rid of the smell is to throw the thing away. Tobacco smoke will have penetrated the fabric/structure at a molecular level...you will never succeed in eliminating it.

If it bothers you, put it down to experience, and don't lend anything like that to a smoker ever again.
