When the minimum wage was introduced by the last Labour Government, the Tories fought tooth and nail in opposing it. It seems that they have had a last-minute conversion on the road to Damascus. Still, we must be grateful for small mercies I suppose.

Drivel naomi. If the minimum wage was such a good idea, as the Tories now appear to think it is, why didn't they bring in legislation to make it law when they had the chance ?

They were in power from May 1979 to May 1997, and showed no inclination whatsoever to do so, and when Labour introduced a Bill in 1998, the few Tories left in Parliament at the time fought tooth and nail to try to stop it. Not only did they not bring a law in, they actually abolished various Wages Councils whose main remit was to ensure that adequate wage levels were paid in certain industries.

The minimum wage improves lives for poor people and we have the Labour party to thank for it. All Osborne is trying to do now, is to bring forward the 2015 Election campaign. Nothing wrong with that of course, but he should be honest about it. He is no more a friend of the poor today than he was a week ago.

Let me finish with a question. Do you think that the Minimum Wage is a good thing ? If you think its a bad idea, do you therefore think that people should be paid less than the current rate of £6.31 an hour ?

I’ve no objection to a minimum wage – but perhaps you ought to think about Labour’s disgraceful abolition of the 10% tax rate for low earners - giving with one hand and taking with the other - how very commendable! And how about sticky, greedy, fingers in the working man’s pension pot – not to mention the imposition of god knows how many stealth taxes – and don’t tell me they only affected the well off because they didn’t – far from it - so, yes, let us be honest about it. I repeat Labour is no longer the party of the ‘working man’. You’re stuck in the past and in an ideology that might have existed in your old dad’s day, but no longer - least of all within the Labour Party. Get a new pair of glasses. Your old ones are clouding your vision.

All very good naomi but this isn't a discussion about the 10% rate of tax, or about sticky fingers. Its about the Minimum Wage and everything that I posted is historical fact. Are you disputing these facts naomi, or are you changing the subject because you can't dispute them ? I am perfectly willing to dispute those facts with you.

Actually, by pure coincidence, I visited the Opticians, or Opthalmists as they now appear to be called and there is no prescription change required !

And if being stuck in the past means that I think that a Government should help its poorer people, as well as the rich, then call me Methuselah !

The problem is that you refuse to engage in a debate about the introduction of the Minimum Wage.

Facts ::: Labour brought it in.....the Tories opposed it...the Tories now say that it was a good thing after all, and think that they can curry favour with uninformed voters, by suggesting that it might be a good idea to increase it. You haven't disputed these facts, so I must presume you think that they true.

As I posted at 14.00 that I think its a good idea to increase it, but like many others on here, I realise that it is only an attempt to convince the electorate that Osborne and the Tories are the poor persons friend, when there is no evidence whatsoever that they are. Poor people really do get poorer under the Tories, except when there is an election in the offing.

Look out for other conversions on the road to Damascus from the Tories in the run-up to May 2015. They will be kissing poor babies next.

Mikey, what debate do you want me to engage in? Labour introduced the minimum wage; at the time Conservatives opposed it because they thought it could cost jobs; nevertheless it hasn’t been abolished and now they’re proposing to raise it above the rate of inflation. What’s wrong with that – and what’s to discuss?

As unsavoury as the facts clearly are to you poor people really did get poorer under the Labour government – and if you think Labour cares so much about the working class and doesn’t have an agenda in the run up to next election, ask yourself why Ed Miliband is now claiming he can save the middle classes. And you trust him? More fool you. You have a short and selective memory.

Just realised what my state pension is. For a forty hour week, it works out at far less per hour than the minimum wage! And I paid for over forty years, out of my earnings, to pay for that!

Naomi, Mr Milliband has to play the hand he has got. He knows that he holds high cards in the suits called "working class". What he has to do , somehow, is win tricks with his low cards in the "middle class" suits.

So now he is playing to the middle class. He has the working class already.
