Can Stress Cause Insomnia
6 Answers
It is 3am and I am wide awake. In the afternoon at 1pm I am having a carpet fitter coming to lift up the carpet so that plumbers and engineers and electricians can go down using a hoist to the basement of my property to find out where a gas leak is as there is no pressure in my boiler I have had no hot water or heating for 3 days. I had an argument with my parents about money now I cant sleep. I never usually have problems sleeping and wondering whether this could be the cause. And is it bad for you to have a night with no sleep

A night without sleep might leave you feeling a bit grumpy on the following day but it isn't, in itself harmful. (I often miss a night's sleep. In my early 20's I only slept for 10 hours per week, with 3 hours each on Tuesday and Thursday nights and 4 hours on Sunday night. It doesn't seem to have killed me!)

Hopefully you'll sleep like a log tonight and make up for it. Yes, arguments and having to plan lots of things might well cause you to lose sleep. But that's all it is - a few hours not sleeping. If you are tired enough physically then unless you are an insomniac you will sleep. So if the engineers don't need you on site, go for a long walk while they're in. Get fresh air, tell your parents you love them and whatever else makes you feel happier inside.
Anything that plays on your mind can stop you sleeping. If your mind is constantly being brought back to the thing that's worrying you, you can't drift off.
Perhaps it'll be better once you find out what's wrong with the boiler. Should you apologise to your parents too? Sorry, obviously I don't know the details and whose "fault" it was, but it might make you feel better if you do.
