In this country at present, our main parties seem to have lost their way, but I digress, the first part, I believe, is the answer your looking for.
I think you'll find the real answer in the following example:-
If a man and his sworn enemy were to depart in opposite directions (obviously because they hate each other) then eventually if they continued travelling, they would meet up,as the Earth is round. The same could be said for politics (certainly in this country where Labour are more right wing than Conservatives now - Tory Blair and all that.)

The words 'left' and 'right' in politics come from the early French Parliament, known as the Estates General. There, the nobility sat on the King's right-hand side and the rest on his left. The nobles, of course, wanted things to go on just as they always had...ie they were 'conservative'. The others wanted change...more fairness in wealth, ownership etc.
Nowadays, the same idea applies to modern governments. In the UK, the Conservative Party has generally been thought of as right-wing and the New Labour Party has generally been thought of as left-wing. (Mind you, the latest Conservative leader is changing things to such an extent that who knows which is left or right any more!)
In the USA, the Republicans are right-wing and the Democrats are left-wing.
The overall idea behind the concepts is "Do we want things to stay much the same (right) or do we want them to change (left)?"
