In this case I would definitely phone up, politely, and firmly, and explain clearly that the payment was only 1 day late, it was a genuine, honest mistake, you are a good customer, and you think a charge is excessive and unfair. As previously suggested, making mention of the wide range of other companies which would be delighted to accept your business might be helpful. It never hurts to point out your disappointment with the company, and that you chose them because you expected to be treated like the good customer that you are. All this is, of course, assuming that you ARE a good customer ...
You don't think the late payment actually cost THEM anything like 25 do you?!
According to your contract with the credit card - the payment WAS late and this results in a charge which they're entitled to apply. Strictly speaking, your question "where do I stand..." is answered, "you stand with 25 less in your pocket" but there's no harm in phoning them up and politely and firmly asking them to waive the charge as a goodwill gesture. If the first person refuses, ask for their manager.
Ask for an outline of their complaints procedure and how you can escalate it to the next level, and the one after that...
Also ask if they have a central complaints department that you can phone or write to.
