I've always known this day as it follows my birthday. It was changed from Empire Day to Commonwelth Day many years ago. How it ever changed to March God only knows!
Having been in junior school in the early 1940's, the 24th of MayisEmpire Day!! It is one of those facts of life thumped into my skull at the same time as reciting my tables. We used to sing all those patriotic songs, now sadly very non PC, have school parades and study the world map where most of it was still pink. Must say it didn't do me any harm, apart from instilling a bit of national pride, very desirable at the time.
