in sainsburys where i sometimes shop they have about eight tills, checkouts and about 10 self checkouts, i have either struggled to stop the machine from repeating asking me for the item, or that i have a bag, when i don't, or that the change hasn't been given, or any known machination of mechanical balls up, so i generally queue, not to mention the staff are pleasant and rarely officious, unlike my more local more upmarket supermarket, which shall remain nameless.
in that case jno, you'd have got the "unexpected item in bagging area......" message. There was a very creative scam in tescos where someone was stealing say a leg of lamb by puting the right weight of say spuds on the scale then putting the lamb in the bag!
Fortnum and Masons? :-)

I don't usually have trouble with the checkouts but they occasionally throw a wobbly over nothing.
they don't always notice the very light stuff, TTT, sometimes you have to throw a bar of chocolate into your bag with great force.
