OK everyone. This is the most difficult question of all. How the heck do you find a comfy pillow (I've tried about a dozen different types in the last year) and also a mattress. I have to buy a new one to replace my old mattress that offers the same degree of comfort as sleeping on a pile of bricks! I know that choosing both pillow and mattress is very much an individual thing.. but I'd be interested to know whether any of you have any recommendations or even whether you have any names I should avoid. I want to avoid memory foam by the way. And whilst I'm at it .. how can you choose a mattress by sitting on it in a store for 5 minutes. It's impossible. Thanks everyone. Please help me get a good night's sleep.

The comfiest mattress in the world is Vi-Spring ... its also very expensive.... but well worth it .....
ok lady _p_gold , how on earth does a mattress adjust to an individuals weight as claimed on vi-springs web site?maybe this is a question for the science page lol.bizzylizzy get down the shops and lie on as many beds as possible, you'll know when you find the right one.dont get palmed off with an expensive bed thats not suitable.

I think the only way to test a mattress is to really lie on it for a while so be prepared to go to a good furniture store and do just that. If they really understand this, they won't query you. Also ask whether it's possible to have a mattress on approval to test. They may say "No" but if you don't take the plastic wrapper off they might not have a problem. I agree, it's very difficult to choose a new bed or mattress because it's an expensive mistake if you get it wrong, but ask yourself a few questions first:

Do you like a firm mattress without much "padding"
Do you like a firm mattress but with lots of "padding"
Do you prefer a "softer" type mattress?
What is your weight? Do you have a lot of body fat which needs to be accommodated, in which case a very firm mattress without padding might feel very uncomfortable..
How long is the mattress guaranteed for? (This may give a clue to its quality).

In general, the more you pay, the better the quality and I feel you spend so much of your life in bed it's one domestic item not worth skimping on.

As for choosing pillows, try phoning the Housekeeping department of a few hotels and ask which brand they use. Bedding in hotels gets pretty heavy use so I imagine they will tend to pick good quality comfortable items.

we alwas stick to reylon beds. and we like feather pillows.
Try the Bed Factory 7 Bermuda Road, Ransomes Industial Estate Ipswich 01473 272010. Don't expect a fancy showroom but they make the mattresses and beds on the premises and they are excellent quality and design and are not expensive. They were originally recommended independantly by a number of friends when we were moving so had to try them. We were amazed at the difference to the high street rubbish and bought three beds, they are so comfortable... zzzzzzz.

i had a new bed 2months ago and felt the same anxieties, i have 6 bulging discs and a muscle problem, someone advised 'Tempur', but when i looked they were very expensive even with a 60 day trial, so i surfed the web and found "Topsleep" at Norwich, they offered 60day trial and free next day delivery at a much better price, i have just read that you want to avoid memory foam, which of course this is, but i went ahead and have been well satisfied and wont be sending it back.

Good luck

I suffer from a really stiff neck and regularly go the the chiropractor for this and I found an excellent pillow to help and it's Dunlopillo. You can get them in Argos for about 16-18. They're so springy but still very soft. It's got this excellent foam which your head just sinks into. I've had mine for about a year now and it hasn't gone flat at all.

We also recently purchased a new mattress and bought a Miracoil Silent night. It's lovely and bouncy and medium firm. We decided to buy a medium priced one and then bought a mattress topper made from memory foam. Again both items bought from Argos. The memory foam is fantastic as it moulds to your body when it gets your body heat.

My bed is my sanctuary at the moment because I love it so much. I lay down and I slowly sink into to mattress and pillow....mmmmm am getting all tired now

remember you spend half your life in bed so why not get something that's good

Sorry Bizzilizzy didn't see you wanted to avoid memory foam. In that case just a Miracoil on it's own would be great. We got the memory foam as my other half suffers with sciatica
Don't know ... all I know is that after we got one I was in heaven and I would never have anything else !!!

We replaced all our pillows with Dunlopillo. They keep their shape & are so comfortable.

Dunlopillo

my mattress is quite firm, so placed my old l3.5 tog duvet over the base, covered it with a sheet as usual. I then bought a new duvet to sleep under. Very warm and comfortable.
I was thinknig of trying a memory foam pillow, has anyone tried one of these.?? I am also going to buy a memoryfoam mattress I have tried a few out but cant decide which make is the best has anyone got one they are happy with??
