"made In England"

Approximately when did products stop being stamped with the above marking? I'm thinking that anything made over there now would be marked "Made In The UK"; however, I could be wrong about that. The reason I ask is that I have a mantle clock movement stamped with "Made In England" and absolutely nothing else, not even a maker. So I am trying to approximate when it was manufactured.

This may be no help at all but Beswick potteries started using the "Made in England" backstamp in the mid-thirties ( although at times since then they have reverted to "England".
I would guess your clock is post 1930's but not 100%.

Thanks, Graham-W. Yes, it's definitely newer than the 30's; I might even go for 60's or 70's. Would things still be marked "Made In England" during that period? The case is of no help as it just says "Made In Canada". However, cases and movements sometimes get swapped.

You could, emmie, probably say the same thing about "Made In Canada". Everything, almost, seems to be from Asia now. But I would like to try to narrow down the date of this movement somewhat based on it's actually being stamped "England" and not "Britain" or "UK".

That's interesting, emmie, but it's mainly concerned with trade marks and not country of origin. But, as I said, interesting.

not going to be easy to find out, as you don't have a manufacturer, maker, can you roughly guess from it's look how old it might be... what shape, colour, you say mantle clock movement, not quite sure what that means,
plenty of mantle clocks, we had ones when i was a kid, old brown type things, which strangely coming back into fashion, as retro...

I would take a guess at the 1960's they still stamped things a Made in England then. Not long after that clocks became nearly 100% quartz movements made for pence in the far east.

stewey, all I can come up with is there are two English firms I can find who seem to have followed some stamping practice of their own - if you contact them, they might have a codger in brown overalls tucked away who might be able to advise

I have just had a really nice bottle of beer from Cumbria, proudly stamped
"Made in England" !

Thanks, people, for you responses. By the way, I've got the going movement in beat; the pendulum is swinging merrily to and fro with an even tic toc; and the striking movement is synchronized...I love it when that happens. Cheer!
