there is some truth in it but not the depth of the hole just having one at all. I think it something to do with allowing the sediment in the wine to settle...

This is an urban myth - no truth whatsoever.

If it was true - every wine producer would insist on those types of bottles.

Some wines produce more sediment than others , the more that wine may produce the deeper the hole. For example a Bordeaux can keep for 20 years and may have a lot of sediment over that period. This doesn't mean that the wine in the long run will be better. Always buy a french wine with Recoltant on the cap. They're the best as they've come from the actual vineyard.

I was told at a wine tasting place that the hole in the bottom is so a waiter can rest his thumb in it and pour it with one hand.

In aged wines, sediment deposits at the bottom or side of the bottle (depending on how the wine was stored), which the punt can help to consolidate

I rest my case....and i dont even drink the stuff!
