I have just bought a 1999 Opel frontier on Ebay. It doesnt have tax, MOT and so obviously I dont have insurance. I am living in Bulgaria and will come back on 1 April to take the car overseas. I will only drive the car for 1 day in England (To the port). Please help. How risky is it to try and take the car out without all these documents. How do I register the car in the UK in my name? Must you have them 1st?? And if I must get the documents, how can I aviod having to pay them for 6 months or a year? Any advice would really help me...PLEASE!

Don't know what the law is in Bulgaria, but all the countries through which you will pass to get there will expect you to have insurance, tax and MOT SOMEWHERE - not necessarily locally. So your problems won't end at the port.

Your best bet is to come from Bulgaria with a car and trailer and take it back on that.

Thanks

And if I buy the car on say 1 April and it hasnt been taxed since 28 February, who is liable for March if it's not declared off the road?

The owner of the car is liable for the road fund licence at all times

As soon as you pay for the car the owner will send off your details to the DVLA. The car will be notified as being permanently exported and no road tax will be required.

You should insure the car with a Bulgarian insurance company using the English registration number. As long as the car isn't dangerous you should be OK to drive it but you could book it in for an MOT near the ferry port to be on the safe side.

However, you really should have an MOT to be on the safe side the car may have dangerous defects that you don't know about.
